Support Independent Living (SIL) Assessments
Support Independent Living (SIL) Assessments for NDIS Participants
Allied Health 2U provides SIL assessments for NDIS participants who are living in, or transitioning into, supported independent living. Our qualified occupational therapists conduct structured functional assessments to determine daily support needs and provide clear evidence for NDIS planning.
A Support Independent Living (SIL) Assessment is a structured assessment that helps determine a participant’s daily support needs within a supported living environment. The purpose is to provide clear functional evidence about what assistance is required, when it is required, and why, so supports can be planned in a way that is safe, reasonable, and sustainable.
At Allied Health 2U, SIL Assessments are completed by qualified clinicians (commonly Occupational Therapists and other relevant allied health professionals, depending on needs). We take a practical, participant-centred approach, considering the person’s functional abilities, routines, risks, goals, and the environment. We then translate findings into a clear report that supports planning, rostering considerations, and funding-related documentation where appropriate.
SIL Assessments are commonly requested as part of NDIS processes, including changes in circumstances, reviews, or service planning for participants living in, or transitioning into, supported accommodation.
A SIL Assessment generally includes information gathering, a functional assessment, and a written report. We review day-to-day activities, supervision needs, risks, and the level of support required across key areas such as personal care, safety, mobility, communication, emotional regulation, community access, and household tasks.
A SIL Assessment may be suitable for NDIS participants who:
are living in, or transitioning into, a supported living arrangement
require regular assistance or supervision across daily activities
have complex needs that impact safety, routines, or independence
need clear evidence to support appropriate SIL support levels and planning
Depending on the participant’s needs, we may assess:
personal care and daily living tasks (e.g., hygiene, dressing, mealtimes)
mobility, transfers, falls risk, and physical support needs
household participation (e.g., meal preparation, cleaning, laundry)
medication routines and health-related supports (as relevant to function)
communication and understanding of instructions
cognition, decision-making, and executive functioning
emotional regulation and behaviour-related support needs (where relevant)
supervision requirements, safety risks, and environmental factors
community access and participation needs
We consider functional ability, consistency of skills, risks, supervision requirements, and the frequency/intensity of assistance needed across a typical day and week. Recommendations are based on clinical findings and are framed in practical terms to support safe routines and sustainable support planning.
Yes. Where appropriate, we provide a written report that summarises functional findings, identifies support needs, and includes clear recommendations to assist with service planning and funding-related decision-making. If there are specific requirements or templates you need addressed, share these with us at the time of booking.
Helpful information may include prior assessments, behaviour support plans (if applicable), incident/risk documentation, current support schedules, medical/therapy summaries, and details about the living environment and routines. If the assessment is for a specific NDIS purpose (review/change of circumstances), tell us so we can align the report intent.
Contact Allied Health 2U to discuss the participant’s needs and the purpose of the SIL Assessment. We will guide you through the process and advise what information is required prior to assessment. If you have a Support Coordinator, they are welcome to coordinate the referral and documentation.
