What Is Behaviour Support and How Is It Funded?
Allied Health 2U is a registered Behaviour Support Service provider with the NDIS Commission. Blacktown participants access PBS funding through the NDIS support category, Improved Relationships.
Behaviour support involves working with NDIS participants who have behaviours of concern and require structured behaviour support interventions. It is not just about managing a behaviour in the moment. It is about understanding what is driving that behaviour and building the practical strategies that make a lasting difference in everyday life.
What Does a Behaviour Support Practitioner Do?
Behaviour Support Practitioners carry out a range of assessments to understand each Blacktown participant's needs, starting with a Functional Behaviour Assessment.
Our Blacktown practitioners build behaviour support plans that work in the participant's actual home, school, day program, or community, not in a theoretical setting. Where regulated restrictive practices are involved, the plan sets out a clear pathway to reduce them.
Coordinated Care Across Allied Health Services
Our Blacktown behaviour support practitioners work alongside our mobile Occupational Therapists and mobile psychologists, helping Western Sydney participants who need more than one service coordinated under one team. When the people around a participant share the same goals, progress is faster. Stronger social connections are often one of the first changes Blacktown families notice as behaviours reduce and confidence builds.
PBS Support for Older Blacktown Participants
For older Blacktown participants with behaviours of concern who have improved Relationships funding, our Blacktown PBS practitioners work most closely with our mental health Occupational Therapists. Ageing can bring change, and behaviours that were once settled may shift as communication, memory, or physical health change over time. Our approach stays the same at any age. We take the time to understand what is driving the behaviour, then build practical strategies that suit the person's everyday life, whether they are living at home, with family, or in supported accommodation.
Who Blacktown Positive Behaviour Support is For
PBS is for any Blacktown NDIS participant who experiences behaviours of concern, regardless of age or diagnosis. We work with children, adults and older participants right across Western Sydney, in homes, schools, supported accommodation and the community.
Blacktown Children and Adolescents
PBS for Blacktown children with developmental disability, autism, intellectual disability or behaviours of concern at home, school or in the community.
Blacktown Adults
PBS for adults living independently, in supported accommodation or with family across Blacktown, including complex behaviours and restrictive practice reduction.
Older Blacktown Participants
Behaviour Support for older NDIS participants in Blacktown, including those experiencing behaviours of concern alongside cognitive change.
Families and Support Workers
Training and coaching for Blacktown families, support workers and SIL teams so the whole team can support the participant well.
A Blacktown Behaviour Support Practitioner will initially come out to meet the participant who requires behaviour support intervention or a Behaviour Support Plan.
The first step involves the practitioner completing a thorough Functional Behaviour Assessment to identify the participant's behaviours of concern and note them all down. The practitioner communicates directly with the participant, as well as the people who spend the most time with them, family, support workers and the broader Blacktown support team.
Once the behaviours of concern have been identified, the practitioner will determine which additional assessments the people around the participant may need to complete.
From there, the practitioner writes a behaviour assessment report detailing the relevant behaviours of concern. They then develop a Behaviour Support Plan that provides clear guidance on how to best support and respond to those behaviours across the Blacktown participant's everyday environments.
There are a range of reasons why behaviours of concern may occur. All behaviours of concern happen for a reason. The reason depends on each individual. Some of the common reasons include:
- The individual may be in pain
- Their medication may not be agreeing with them
- The individual may be sick
- The individual has a condition such as autism, schizophrenia or Prader Willi syndrome
- The individual is not eating well
- Their hormones may not be working properly
- The individual may be hungry or thirsty and not know how to communicate that
- The individual may want to go somewhere, do something, or feel lonely and not be able to communicate effectively
- The individual may show behaviours of concern to get something they want, such as spending time with someone, accessing a preferred item, or avoiding a task they do not want to do
- There may be something about the environment they do not like, for example it is too noisy or too quiet, too hot or too cold, there are unpleasant smells, they cannot reach something, there are too many people around, or they are bored
Understanding the why behind the behaviour is the foundation of effective Positive Behaviour Support, and it is the first thing our Blacktown practitioners work on with every participant.
As a registered NDIS provider operating in Sydney since 2015, our Blacktown Behaviour Support Practitioners have the skills and experience to deliver behaviour assessment reports, Behaviour Support Plans, behaviour therapy and implementation support to NDIS participants across Australia.
Our team helps Blacktown participants work toward their NDIS goals around independence, community participation and overall wellbeing.
